"I Witnessed a Miracle" | Sister Timothy Marie, O.C.D.
The following story is true. It happened to me. I will never, ever forget it.
I had been a Carmelite Sister for many years when this story occurred. It changed my life forever, and I came away from the experience with an explosion of faith bursting within my soul. To cut to the quick and bring forth the significance of the experience right away, let me just say that two other teachers and myself found ourselves teaching an eighth grade class with a special problem, or should I say burden? Whatever you want to call it, these students carried an unseen burden that permeated them and their classroom as well. It was some kind of oppressive sadness. Honestly, it’s true. The atmosphere was palpably, distressingly – there’s no other way to describe it – sad. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. We asked each other what happened to bring about this deep sadness.
Solidarity: In Caring for the Sick and Elderly | Carla Cotti
My friend’s dad recently went through a stroke, then rehab therapies, followed by further difficulties of walking and speaking, but he remained alert. She and her loving sisters hired good caregivers to help take care of dad. Later, he needed some small, surgical procedures which were then followed by infections and the need for more surgical procedures. At this point, the sisters really did not know how to ‘judge’ what was the right thing to do for him. One sister said that she just didn’t want dad to ‘suffer’ any more. The doctor looked to the family for their ‘decision.’ What did they want him to do? Read More
Letter from the Editor | Mother Regina Marie
Dear Friends,

Going Deeper | Sister Timothy Marie
Recently an evaluation form with seven haunting words written across the page was turned in to our retreat office following a retreat at Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra, California. It read,“Go deeper, Sisters. We can take it.” These seven words reveal an intense inner yearning. Speaking of this yearning,Saint Augustine wrote, “Our hearts are restless, O Lord, and they will not rest until they rest in Thee..."

Meeting the Carmelite Saints: St. John of the Cross
Gonzalo de Yepes, the father of St. John of the Cross, was a wealthy man, a silk merchant, who fell in love with a woman named Catalina, a poor girl from Medina del Campo. His family threatened Gonzalo, “If you marry her, you will divorce yourself from your inheritance and your name.” Gonzalo replied that he would give up everything to be with his beloved Catalina. So, Gonzalo de Yepes married Catalina Alvarez and then settled into a life of poverty. Gonzalo learned Catalina’s lowly trade of weaving. Three years later, the tumultuous, chaotic waters of poverty and death swept over the family and John was left an orphan. Two years later, John’s younger brother died of malnutrition...

Moments of Grace: And the Angels Danced
It was a magnificent winter evening. The air was crisp and cold as the distant sun began to descend behind the oil derricks in Carson, California. Our convent car gave a shudder as I turned the key in the ignition and carefully backed out of the driveway. Yes, I would be there on time. This time I wouldn’t be late. Driving carefully through the school playground surrounding our convent, I made my usual left turn onto Main Street and began driving south. Prayers at our nearby convent began promptly at 5:00 p.m. and I was looking forward to joining my other Carmelite Sisters in singing God’s praises. Little did I know, as I made my left turn onto Sepulveda Boulevard, that this would be no ordinary journey...
