What is Handmaidens?

Handmaidens is a faith formation group for single women between the ages of 18 and 35, dedicated to cultivating a deeper relationship with our Lord, as well as a greater understanding and appreciation of the dignity of their vocation as women. Formation and living holiness in the world is supported and nurtured through adoration, prayer and conferences given by the Carmelite Sisters and chosen laity.

Upcoming Events

Opening Holy Hour & Game Night

(Evening Prayer, Holy Hour with meditations, Potluck dinner, Game Night)

Time: 5:00 pm- 9:00 pm

Location: St. Joseph Campus

Topic: In the Eyes of our Beloved Beloved and Beautiful… even me? YES!!! Enter into the gaze of our Beloved during this time of Adoration as we begin to unwrap this year’s theme. Then we’ll enjoy some time of friendship and fellowship to welcome both new and returning Handmaidens.

Boutique Bake-a-thon

Time: 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Location: Sacred Heart Retreat House

11:30 Mass with the sisters and the weekend retreatants

12:30 Lunch picnic style- bring your own sack lunch

1:00- 3:30 Boutique Bake-a-thon

4:00-5:00 Adoration and Evening Prayer with the Sisters

Come help us take over the Sacred Heart Retreat House kitchen and prepare for our annual Boutique. Donning hair nets and aprons, we’ll make fudge, mix soups and bake lots of sweet treats. A beautiful Sunday Holy Hour will conclude the afternoon. Don’t miss out on this fun afternoon!

“Authentic Friendship”

(Evening Prayer at St. Joseph Chapel, Potluck dinner, Conference, Adoration, Dessert and Discussion)

Time: 5:30 pm-9:00 pm

Location: Santa Teresita Villa

Topic: “Authentic Friendship” Come explore how God made women with a tremendous capacity for interpersonal relationships. With Our Lady and her cousin Elizabeth as our guides, we’ll discuss true self-gift and the life-giving characteristics of authentic friendship.

Handmaidens Advent Day of Prayer

(Las Posadas, Dinner & Christmas Caroling)

Time: 10:00 a.m. -8:30 p.m.

Location: St. Joseph Campus / Sacred Heart Retreat House

Topic: Handmaiden Day of Prayer: Purity of Heart

10:00-4:30 Las Posadas

4:45-6:00 Dinner and Christmas Caroling in the neighborhood

Reflecting the Purity of the Immaculate Heart

Speakers: Novitiate Contemplating the beauty and purity of Mary’s Heart, we’ll delve into the riches of her love for Jesus and ask her to help us prepare our hearts for His coming among us.

St. Mary Magdalene and the Purifying Fire of Love

Speaker: Sister Gloria Therese, OCD Can hearts really be made new? Does love really cover a multitude of sins? Find out how Mary Magdalene was able to find forgiveness and embrace the fullness of God’s transforming love.Cost: $25 for the Day of Prayer

“Living in the Truth”

Topic: “Living in the Truth”

Our Lord thirsts for our love and invites us to worship Him in spirit and truth. With the Samaritan Woman, we will seek to open ourselves to being deeply known that we may be satiated by the living water of His merciful love.

“Walking in the Footsteps of a Woman of Faith: Mother Luisita”

Time: 7:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

Location: Meet at St. Joseph Campus

Topic: Mother Luisita Pilgrimage Join us as we walk in the footsteps of a woman of courage and faith who was determined to live the will of the Lord no matter the cost: Venerable Mother Luisita, the beloved Foundress of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Mother Luisita arrived in Los Angeles as a refugee in 1927 and lived here for a period of time. She established several houses before traveling back to Mexico. This bus tour will inspire you to live holiness in your everyday life.Cost: $25

“Femininity and Beauty”

(Praise and Worship with the Marycrest residents, Evening Prayer, Potluck dinner, Conference, Adoration, Dessert and Discussion)

Time: 4:00 p.m. -8:30 p.m.

Location: Marycrest Manor, Culver City

Topic: “Femininity and Beauty” Every woman wants to be beautiful! How can we truly radiate both the inner and outer beauty with which we are endowed?

Annual Beach Trip with the Sisters!

Location: Meet at Sacred Heart Retreat House to Carpool OR meet us at Point Vincente Interpretive Center- 31501 Palos Verdes Dr W, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275

Activity: Join many of our sisters as well as our Come and See guests for a beautiful evening at the beach! Dinner, Evening prayer, wonderful company, great music and breathtaking scenery!
